Tourism is one of Ireland's most important economic sectors and is one of our largest indigenous industries, supporting an estimated 260,000 jobs in communities all around the country.2018 was another record-breaking year for overseas visits to Ireland and marked 8 years of consecutive growth in overseas visit numbers, further underlining the value of the sector to the economy. Tourism promotes Ireland as an attractive place to live, work and invest.
The Department’s High Level Goal for Tourism is To support the tourism industry to grow in a sustainable way.
The Department’s main role in relation to tourism is to set national tourism policy. Through the development of this policy, it provides direction to the tourism industry, helping it to grow in a competitive and sustainable manner. All policy actions and programmes are developed by the Department, its agencies and other Government Departments, in consultation with the industry. The tourism agencies, Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland, deliver and implement the national tourism policy.
